A two-part professional development course exploring phonological awareness in ELT through theory, reflection, and practical application. Participants will build confidence and clarity in teaching pronunciation and listening across diverse learner contexts. 🕮 Syllabus - Defining Phonological Awareness: An overview of core phonological features and their relevance to teaching and learning. - Articulatory Phonetics for the Classroom: Key articulatory processes, with a focus on how to explain and demonstrate sounds clearly to learners. - Working with the Phonemic Chart: Exploring the IPA chart as a tool for instruction and learner autonomy. - Integrating Pronunciation into Skills Work:Techniques for embedding pronunciation within speaking and listening tasks, rather than treating it as an add-on. - Stress, Rhythm, and Connected Speech; An introduction to suprasegmental features and their implications for intelligibility and fluency. - Phonological Challenges for L1 Learners: Identifying common L1 transfer issues and planning targeted intervention strategies. Error Diagnosis and Feedback Strategies: How to notice, interpret, and respond to learner difficulties in pronunciation. - Designing Pronunciation-focused Activities Creating and adapting materials to meet the needs of different learner levels and contexts. 🏅Participants complete an asynchronous end-of-course task or quiz to demonstrate applied understanding and earn the course award: Forge Ahead certificate.
